Import Export Code (IEC) Registration in India
The Import Export Code is a PAN-based registration from the DGFT that is mandatory for anyone importing goods into or exporting goods out of India. Banks won't process cross-border trade payments without it.
It is issued once and is valid for the life of the business — but it must be updated (confirmed) every year, and lapsing on that update can deactivate the code.
Key features and requirements
- Mandatory for import and export of goods (and certain services)
- PAN-based; one IEC per PAN
- Issued by the DGFT, valid for the life of the entity
- Must be electronically updated once every year to stay active
- Required by banks to process foreign trade remittances
