Import Export Code (IEC) Registration in India

The Import Export Code is a PAN-based registration from the DGFT that is mandatory for anyone importing goods into or exporting goods out of India. Banks won't process cross-border trade payments without it.

It is issued once and is valid for the life of the business — but it must be updated (confirmed) every year, and lapsing on that update can deactivate the code.

Key features and requirements

  • Mandatory for import and export of goods (and certain services)
  • PAN-based; one IEC per PAN
  • Issued by the DGFT, valid for the life of the entity
  • Must be electronically updated once every year to stay active
  • Required by banks to process foreign trade remittances
